The White Elephant

A caravan of merchants lost its way while travelling in the savannah. They had nothing to drink or eat and as they desperately awaited death a white elephant came and stopped before them. The elephant asked them what had happened to them. The chief of the caravan told the elephant about their unlucky crossing and how they had lost their bearings and did not know how to get out of there nor did they have the strength to do so since they had been many days without food and drink.

The elephant pointed to a mountain with its trunk - there you will find fresh water, and at the foot of the cliff you will find food.

The elephant started walking and got lost.

The chief of the caravan woke up the others and together they headed for the mountain where they found fresh water and, a little further down, at the foot of the precipice, the dead body of the white elephant. It had fallen off the cliff.

They all ate and drank and soon recovered their strength.
